Why I support our HBCU Tours
By: Brenda Ray
After three years working as an educator in Santa Clara County, I recognized the neglect experienced by students identified as African Americans. Too many exhibited shame, low self-esteem, and dismal academic achievement. Oddly, the economic success of the parents did not influence their performance. Several strategies were utilized by African American educators to provide cultural identity and uplift the morale and academic achievement of our student population. Appealing to Boards of Trustees to acknowledge test scores and Black History Week/month at the district level, providing traveling plays featuring AA students within district schools, provision of summer school programs, and recruitment of African American teachers in various districts to advocate for our students via a local or national organization with the same goals. Immediate or long-term Impact of the above activities on students' academic achievement is unknown. That is why I support HBCU Tours.
A small LLC, Della Tours was recruiting high school students for HBCU tours, financed by donations from the community. Students in attendance returned and exhibited immediate impact verbally/written and displayed academic improvement in the classroom. Surveys upon return and follow-up for a year indicated improved motivation, acquired knowledge of their heritage, and recognition that they belonged to a culture worthy of celebration. Many had not been in the presence of large numbers of African Americans. I donate to give our youth a boost into a future without poverty, shame, or neglect. My satisfaction is knowing that one student each year is touched by my generosity. That is why I donate to HBCU Tours!
